🔍 Bing adds to search reports, Fresh audience targeting tactics

Good morning search marketers, how's your traffic looking?

We kid, but we start today with a new launch by Bing. Microsoft's search engine has added info on shopping campaigns to its search terms reporting grid. While not major news, the announcement shows Bing's commitment to making the platform simpler for multichannel search marketers. Bing is promising more incremental updates through the year.

Also today, U.K.-based search specialist Ben Wood breaks down a few approaches for using automation to boost the performance of PPC campaigns. One successful tactic: "Layering smart bidding with management scripts that factor in client specific data such as seasonality, stock levels and other factors," he writes.

Also, check out this phenomenal guide to choosing a location services provider by Greg Sterling. It's not always easy to know what to ask. Greg's broken it down by platform and has written down the questions for you.

There's more below, including audience targeting tips, our reading list and some chatter about a possible algorithm shift. We know how much you love those.

Audience targeting gives big boost to campaigns

If you missed SMX West, you missed the session by Bing's Christi Olson and NordicClick Interactive's Brooke Osmundson in which they broke down the ways PPC marketers can use audiences in Bing and Google to improve the performance of their campaigns.

"Take the time to understand your target user and how audiences work in each of the platforms to know both your opportunities and limitations. Once you have this understanding in place, you'll be able to improve your marketing and better connect with the audience who is right for your business," writes Joe Martinez in his recap of the San Jose session.

Algorithm changes and Mueller tips

Something's changing. Following last week's events, we are seeing more chatter from within the community about shifts and changes with the search rankings in Google over the weekend. Google has not yet confirmed any of these updates but you should watch out for shifts in your site's Google organic traffic.

Three pearls of wisdom. John Mueller, Google's webmaster trends analyst, posted three tips on Twitter over the weekend. 1) if you are getting spammed by bad links, he said don't worry about it, Google can ignore them. 2) Having multiple XML sitemap files is perfectly fine. 3) And featured snippets change all the time, that is normal.

Coming soon? Google was caught testing a preview of the Discover feed in Google Search Console's performance report. Google quickly removed any hints of this data coming to Search Console after it was spotted in the wild.
