🔍 Managing search console errors, the UX debate and a Bing ads reminder

Good morning search marketers, welcome to Search Engine Land's brand-new daily brief.

Blink and you might miss them, but Google has rolled out new product card buttons for desktop search, adding "details," "reviews" and "stores" in Google Shopping product panels. Let us know if you see any measurable impact tied to these.

But speaking of impact, our own Detlef Johnson is continuing his breakdown of Google Search Console, this week focusing on managing validation errors kicked up by the console. There's a difference between usability errors and other errors tied to things like AMP and structured data reporting that can have a real impact on results. There's a lot to keep in mind.

And then there's this smaller note about GSC: The company this week reminded users that mobile app properties will be removed from the console and that it's time to remove Google+ buttons from your webpages (though the time for that has honestly long passed).

Here's another reminder: If you're using Bing Ads and targeting users who may be searching in multiple languages, there may be some targeting nuances you're not aware of. For example, did you know language targeting dictates which countries you're targeting? Take a look to make sure you're setting up your language-targeted campaigns correctly in Bing Ads.

We've also just released the SMX Advanced agenda, so I hope you'll pitch to speak or make plans to join us.

There's a lot more in the newsletter below, including a candid moment on The Soapbox from Detlef on the UX debate, so keep scrolling.

Happy optimizing.

There's a new script for finding the best text for new ads using an n-gram analysis, courtesy of Fred Vallaeys of Optmyzr. It analyzes the performance of commonly found word sequences to deliver additional insights about historical ad performance. As Vallaeys explains, "Because we can restrict an n-gram analysis to as many or as few words as we want … we can find the specific calls to action, unique value propositions, or offers that are driving results for campaigns. This script can look inside headline 1 to help us determine if a sequence of words like '$5 off $49′ or '10 percent off' usually delivers a better result."

The UX debate has reared its ugly head ... again

Algorithm change? Over the past few weeks, the SEO community has been chatting about Google ranking changes in core web search. But while we saw signals of these changes on and around both Feb. 7 and Feb. 12, these updates are not yet confirmed by Google. Something happened, though, and there are indications in online tracking tools from Moz, SEMRush, RankRanger and other tool providers.

This again? SEOs have rekindled a debate about whether Google uses user experience and behavioral signals within their core ranking algorithm after Gary Illyes, in an AMA on Reddit, said they do not use it. Google has said that many times over the past decade or more.  However, some SEOs believe Google is lying. While Google does use behavioral data to measure the success of their search ranking algorithms with quality raters, Google stands by its claim that behavioral data is not directly used when ranking search results in Google.

For the WordPress crowd. Yoast released an update to their popular WordPress plugin. Version 9.6 is a bug fix release with an additional focus on improving the code base of the plugin to better adhere to coding standards.

SEO for e-commerce. John Mueller, a Google webmaster trends analysts, posted on Google+ that he is interested in doing a Google office hours to help e-commerce site owners with their search and SEO related questions. You can post your questions on Google+ for Mueller ahead of time. John is also looking for a new method to accept questions for future webmaster office hangouts, if you have ideas – share them with him on Twitter.

Image enhancement. Google is testing a new feature in image search to show a section for "recently viewed" when you are looking at another image in preview mode. This was discovered by @sergey_alakov and you can see images of this on Twitter.

About this UX question...

The source of unconfirmed UX theoretical metrics came from HotBot using DirectHit in the old days (which measured clicks on results). Since then, a whole lot of shaky experiments have tried to prove this.

There are also historical comments by Google saying things like a high number of links on a page is a signal of bad UX (overwhelming users with too many choices). That starts to look a lot like Google is doing some UX analyses for ranking things. But they are not.

It does get blurry when we talk about on-page factors like links because on-page factors do influence things a bit, and therefore by definition, these things are UX related. But a blanket comment about UX for ranking or not is just not useful enough.
