🔍 Much ado about featured snippets, introducing SMX Insights

Good morning search marketers, let's talk about featured snippets.

These have long been debated by content producers – are they a boon to sites shown in "position zero," or is Google costing site owners valuable traffic by showing their content right on search results pages? A newish mobile card of snippets brought this debate to the surface again over the weekend, with Google's Danny Sullivan weighing in and defending the snippet treatment.

Google made some news at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona yesterday with announcements that Google Assistant is coming to more smartphones and local search suggestions are coming to Messages on Android. For a speed check, Google also launched a rebuilt Test My Site tool that has more bells and whistles to gauge how fast your site is running on mobile.

Still on HTTP? Turns out those 'not secure' browser warnings actually do scare nearly half of users, according to a new study out of the UK.

YouTube is steadily becoming more performance advertising oriented, with newish features like custom intent audiences and formats like TrueView for Action featuring more prominent calls to action. Search marketers who want to do more with video campaigns will feel pretty at home with these features. Googler Matt Lawson lays out the benefits of approaching YouTube like a search marketer in his latest column.

There's lots more below, including a ProTip (on featured snippets no less) and Search Shorts, to keep you up to speed.

Can tables steal a featured spot?

There are different types of featured snippets and going after the top spot with tabular data can bump competitors out. But the strategy requires you understand the difference between structured data and content structure. As Brodie Clark of Optimising explains, "Structured data refers to when you implement a type of markup on a webpage, which helps to give additional details surrounding the page content. Content structure, on the other hand, relates to organizing the HTML on a page. This can be headings, the title tag and meta description, or alt tags for images."

Taking the featured snippet isn't always easy but by providing the right data, Google can use it in a variety of ways. The same is true for the user. As Clark notes, "Who doesn't like reading information in an organized table that is easy to consume?"

Pay attention, the algorithm may have changed

Algo update? Starting Friday and throughout the weekend, it appears there may have been a Google search ranking algorithm update. While it is not confirmed, there is a lot of chatter and some signals pointing to a shake up.

Double time. While it is very rare to ever see a double featured snippet in Google, we know it happens. The folks at Moz published an early study around these special featured snippets that you might want to check out.

Stat finder. Google Analytics made a tweak to their interface, bringing a big search box front and center. You can search for reports, questions or help documentation right in that search box.

Who asked that?. The folks at ThriveHive built a tool that shows local SEOs the most popular questions submitted to Google's local Q&A feature by business category.

Yes, si'l vous plait. Two languages in one site? Google's John Mueller said Google will pick up both languages on the site but it isn't recommended to have mixed languages on a site for both your users and Google.
