🔍 New resource: Periodic Table of Digital Commerce Marketing

Good morning search marketers, hello from day 2 of SMX West!

If you're not able to be with us in San Jose, follow along at #SMX on Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.

I spent most of yesterday learning from the deeply knowledgeable experts speaking on digital commerce marketing. Commerce marketing is undergoing a massive digital transformation. The impact of this transformation is evident in the Search results as new promotional opportunities (both paid and organic!). To help us all wrap our heads around these changes, opportunities and trends, we released our newest periodic table yesterday: The Periodic Table of Digital Commerce Marketing.

The table and accompanying report encompasses channels, promotional products offered across those channels and omnichannel capabilities for retailers with a presence both online and offline. It also shows optimization considerations and campaign targeting mechanisms available as well as tools to help digital commerce marketers maximize their exposure and efficiency on their chosen channels. I hope you find it valuable — and if you have thoughts or feedback, shoot me an email at gmarvin@thirddoormedia.com

Also yesterday at SMX West, Bing announced plans to release the first phase of refreshed and improved Bing Webmaster Tools in the first week of March. The new toolset promises to offer a faster, cleaner, more responsive and even more actionable set of features for SEOs and Webmasters.

Build SEO seasonality projections with Google Trends in Python

"Roadmapping season is upon us and that means it's time to set your FY20 goals for the SEO channel," explains Tyler Reardon of Chewy.com. "To set realistic goals, we first need to understand how much traffic we can reasonably drive from SEO this year. To figure this out, we must first answer a few questions: 1) How much traffic are we currently driving from SEO? 2) If we only take seasonality into account, how much traffic will we drive this year? 3) What impact do we expect from the projects on our roadmap?"

"This article will help answer some of these questions and tie it all together to set your SEO traffic goal using Python and some very basic Excel functions."

Google update blip...

Google algorithm blip. We saw some signs of maybe a small Google search ranking update earlier this week.

SEO fueling hate. Google's John Mueller, on the topic of SEOs fueling hate, said: "Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should."  So true.
