🔍 Video rankings in Google & YouTube

Good morning, Search Marketer, do you have a video optimization strategy?

A new study on video rankings in Google search results from Perficient Digital reaffirms the agency's 2017 study that found YouTube still dominates, particularly in video carousels. Google has long disputed claims that it favors YouTube over other video sources.

But, the study also looked at the ranking differences between YouTube and Google, noting the ranking algorithms on the two platforms are "fundamentally different." The top ranked videos (from YouTube) in Google results didn't correspond to YouTube rankings, for example. That means you should think about video optimization tactics for both Google and YouTube.

If you missed SMX yesterday, not to worry, all sessions will be on demand. (There's one silver lining in 2020.) Day two of SMX starts at 11:00 AM EST today with Mike King of iPullRank on Where Search Marketing Goes From Here. Then some of the best — and most generous — minds in the industry will share their insights on Organic, Paid Search and Social, and Technical SEO topics throughout the day. I was going to highlight a few, but I can't choose. Check out the agenda here.

WhatsApp gets shopping carts

The Facebook-owned messaging app WhatsApp announced yesterday that it is adding the ability for users to add multiple products from a merchant's catalog to a shopping cart on the service. "Once you've successfully updated your cart, you can send it to the seller as a WhatsApp message," the company explains in the how-to documentation. Sellers then confirm the orders. Carts are rolling out globally.

Why we care. Facebook is looking to commerce as WhatsApp's monetization strategy. WhatsApp says it is becoming "a store counter to discuss products and coordinate sales." Carts are aimed at making commerce easier through WhatsApp messaging. However, there's still no way to actually checkout and pay businesses after placing an order via carts. As TechCrunch notes, "both parties are left on their own to figure out how money will exchange hands."

Google crawl priority, request indexing tool and leads form extensions.

Google crawl priority. Google's John Mueller said if he "had to simplify crawling priority, I wouldn't do it by size, but rather by the additional unique & important value provided by the pages."

Google Ads leads form extension. You can now share lead form extensions across campaign types, and lead forms for YouTube and Discovery campaigns are now available in the "Extensions" page of Google Ads.

CEO and SEO. Here is a fun line from Google's John Mueller, "To be quite honest, I think we both would make a bad CEO if the first thing we focus on is SEO."

Request indexing tool. Gary Illyes from Google being sarcastic, on some level, posted this on Twitter: "a scientific study(*) revealed that most people used the request indexing feature for reasons that arguably should be considered a crime against microchips."

How to unify your marketing to deliver the ideal buyer's journey

Sponsored by Integrate

Oftentimes, when we visualize the perfect buyer's journey, we're looking at it from a marketer's perspective, imagining what we're trying to achieve with our initiatives. But, ultimately, the definition of the perfect journey is in the eye of the buyer. The buyer doesn't really care about your programs, your channels or what technologies you're using, they're just trying to get enough information to make a purchase decision.

We recently spoke to Integrate CMO Deb Wolf about the perfect buyer's journey and the obstacles marketing teams face when trying to deliver the ideal customer experience. In the lightly-edited conversation, Wolf shares specific tips for building connections between siloed channels, technologies and teams, as well as the reasons why this is so important today.
