🔍 More images in search |Google's EU local search solution

Good morning, search marketers, a picture's worth 1,000 clicks?

That's looking more likely as Google is featuring images more in core search results — and image search optimization becomes even more important as a result. Multiple tracking tools report an increase in the percentage of Google search results pages that include images. The image box started appearing in the top ten results in more than one-third of search results in the U.S. around the middle of this month, according to new data from SEOClarity — up from less than a quarter.

In the EU, Google may be trying to preempt further antitrust action by the European Commission. Reader Frank Sandtmann shared screenshots of Google results from Germany with a new prompt in local search results to "find results on" other sites. Yelp has already derided the remedy as an inadequate solution to drive meaningful traffic to Google competitors.

And just a heads up that Google's Gary Illyes updated the Crawl Budget explanation document to note that AJAX/XHR calls consume your site's crawl budget. It's not a change, just a clarification. Most site owners won't have to worry about conserving crawl budget, but if you do need to prioritize calls, this may be something to look at.

Here's how to target the right audience for Gmail ads

"The key to running successful Gmail ads is to pick the right audience," explains Jacob Baadsgaard of Disruptive Advertising. "There are three different ways to target your ideal audience with Gmail ads. 1) Keyword targeting: This allows you to target people based on their interest in certain words or phrases. There are a lot of ways you can use this, but one effective strategy is to target your competition's branded keywords – especially if you are in an industry with big-name brands. 2) Audience targeting: Target an audience that you have already built out in your account. The most obvious use of this is your remarketing audience to expand its scope. 3) Demographic targeting: This often gets overlooked in display advertising campaigns but can actually be the secret sauce that makes your Gmail ads really sing. To figure out your ideal demographic targeting, all you have to do is see who is converting on your website in Google Analytics under Audience > Demographics > Overview. If you filter by 'Converters,' you should be able to identify your ideal demographic quickly."

Links, APIs and maps

Nofollow working just fine. Google's John Mueller said the nofollow link attribute is working fairly well.

POI Establishment. There are a number of local businesses and local SEOs noticing a new category in Google My Business named POI Establishment. (Point Of Interest Establishment?) It's not clear what this designation should be used for, and people are finding it confusing.

Limited API. Google's live indexing API is for a limited set of use cases, says Google's John Mueller. He also asked how you would like to use it.

Can't control it. Google understands you can't always control who and how people link to you and that is okay.

Indicators

DuckDuckGo's mobile jump

DuckDuckGo's year-over-year organic search visit growth hit 78% on mobile and 54% overall, according to Merkle's Q1 2019 Digital Marketing Report. Meanwhile, Google's mobile organic search visits grew 6% and its overall visits fell by 2%. Both Yahoo and Bing saw declines.

While still a tiny segment of total search, DuckDuckGo is the only search engine to have increased its share of mobile U.S. organic search visits (from 0.5% to 0.6%). The privacy-focused company still accounts for just 0.5% of all organic search visits.
