Good morning, search marketers, are you tired of being kept in the dark?
Google's issues are mounting as a new bug strikes Google News publishers. This one's different than the de-indexing bug from last week and is reportedly only impacting a "limited number of publishers."
Let's take a look back on the last month: Google silently stopped supporting rel=prev/next; a de-indexing bug removed, by some estimates, 4% of the index; and we learned that bug also impacted Search Console reports and tools.
The recent slew of issues has us contemplating our rights in this delicate ecosystem. Are we, the content producers and optimizers, merely beneficiaries of a free service? And, if so, is a simple apology enough to smooth things over since we're getting what we (didn't) pay for?
Or, are we all partners since Google wouldn't be anything without the content we produce and make available to its crawler and index?
If it's the latter, then perhaps explanations are due. Historically, Google hasn't been the most transparent entity out there. If we value transparency, it's on us to call for it.
