🔍 New bug strikes Google News publishers | Are we owed an explanation?

Good morning, search marketers, are you tired of being kept in the dark?

Google's issues are mounting as a new bug strikes Google News publishers. This one's different than the de-indexing bug from last week and is reportedly only impacting a "limited number of publishers."

Let's take a look back on the last month: Google silently stopped supporting rel=prev/next; a de-indexing bug removed, by some estimates, 4% of the index; and we learned that bug also impacted Search Console reports and tools.

The recent slew of issues has us contemplating our rights in this delicate ecosystem. Are we, the content producers and optimizers, merely beneficiaries of a free service? And, if so, is a simple apology enough to smooth things over since we're getting what we (didn't) pay for?

Or, are we all partners since Google wouldn't be anything without the content we produce and make available to its crawler and index?

If it's the latter, then perhaps explanations are due. Historically, Google hasn't been the most transparent entity out there. If we value transparency, it's on us to call for it.

How do you address plurals and variation in SKAGs?

"Addressing plurals, variations and misspellings within an account featuring a SKAG-led architecture is determined by the volume of activity on those types of unintended searches," explains Adam Seybold of DEG Digital during his SMX West session. "If the plurals, variations and misspellings account for 20 percent or more of the activity on a keyword, then it should be optimized and added to your account. However, if it's lower than 20 percent I recommend letting the activity occur since the 'juice is not worth the squeeze.'"

When you know and when you don't know.

I don't know doesn't mean I don't know. John Mueller of Google said that sometimes when he says "I don't know," it doesn't really mean he doesn't know – it is just that he doesn't know the proper answer.

Site command for individual URLs. While Google generally says don't use the site command often, you can use it for debugging individual URLs, especially with the current bugs in Search Console.

Using CDNs.If you are using a CDN, content delivery network, for hosting, try to use it on your own domain name, maybe as a subdomain, so you have control over the URLs in case you later want to switch, says Google.

Granular metrics. Google generally has algorithms that look at things on a more detailed and granular level. Back in the day, those algorithms may have been more broad.
