🔍 Will Google charge for My Business listings? | Farewell Bing Ads, hello Microsoft Advertising

Good morning, search marketers, did you miss me?

Because I certainly missed you. This is George Nguyen, Search Engine Land's Associate Editor; it's my pleasure to be delivering your newsletter intro over the next few days while our Editor-In-Chief attends and reports from the Microsoft Partner Summit. Let's dive in, shall we?

Google Search Console reports seem to be back on track following a multi-week delay. The standard delay is 48 hours, but it's not uncommon for it to take an extra day. This issue generated so much attention because of the recent indexing bug and the length of the delays.

Some Google My Business users are getting surveyed to see if they'd pay for some of the features they're currently getting for free. Google may charge between $10 and $70 per month to be listed in local results, according to the survey. Charging to be included in search results is a departure from how Google normally monetizes its search ads and does bring up some ethical issues — but it's not certain they'll implement this. We'll keep you posted if they do.

Days ahead of the Global Bing Partner Summit, Bing Ads has been rebranded as Microsoft Advertising. The rebrand reflects the emphasis on AI and personalization as well as Microsoft's resurgent name value.

Heads up, SEOs! May is upon us and its arrival doesn't just mean Star Wars and Justin Timberlake memes: parallel tracking for Google Ads display campaigns goes live on May 1. It should get users to your landing pages faster and it'll become mandatory for advertisers that append tracking parameters to their display ad URLs on July 31, so, if you use third-party click measurement, get in touch with your vendor to verify that they're ready.

And finally, Google reported Q1 2019 earnings yesterday. Ad revenues increased 15% year over year to $30.7 billion. For reference, each of the previous four quarters saw increases of 20 to 24% year over year.

Here's how to choose the right the right image formats and sizes for SEO

"Image file size can disproportionately affect page load time so it's important to get it right," explains Romain Damery of Path Interactive. "JPEGs are usually more SEO-friendly than PNGs, especially if you do not need transparent backgrounds, as they offer better compression levels. Logos and other high-resolution, computer-generated graphics can typically also use the vector-based SVG file format (make sure that your server caches, minifies and compresses that format as well). The GIF format should be reserved for simple animations that don't require wide color scales (they are limited to 256 colors). For large and lengthy animated images, it may be best to use a true video format instead, as it allows for video sitemaps and schema."

"What matters most is the actual file size (in KB) of the images themselves: always strive to save them under 100 KB or less whenever possible. If a larger file size must be used above the fold (for hero or banner images for instance), it can help to save images as progressive JPGs where images can start progressively displaying as they are being loaded (a blurry version of the full image first appears and gradually sharpens as more bytes are downloaded)."

Possible Google algorithm update?

Google algorithm update. There is some speculation and chatter in the industry about a possible Google update going on. We are looking to get something on the record from Google on the matter.

Lose Usefulness. Google confirms that some features in Google Search Console have lost usefulness over time. So when you use them, they may not do what you think they might do.  Reminds me of the rel=next/prev blunder.

Insulting Google search results. Google issued a statement about a recent insulting set of search results that were appearing for some time.

Thanos Google easter egg. Watch those search results disappear with this Google easter egg when you search for [thanos].
