🔍 New Google Shopping goes live in U.S.

Good morning search marketers, we're speeding into the holidays.

Just in time, yesterday Google released the new Google Shopping experience in the U.S. that it teased in May. This is a Shopping destination located at https://shopping.google.com/ that's separate from the Shopping tab in Search and is aimed squarely at Amazon.

It features personalized recommendations based on users' search activity, a price alert tool and prominently features items that users can "Buy on Google" right from the listings. That's powered by Google's cost-per-action program for retailers, currently called Google Shopping Actions. With this debut, it's become even more clear that merchants will need to adopt Shopping Actions if they want to get prominent visibility in Google's Shopping experiences.  We'll be talking more about what this means for sellers at SMX East next month.

If your site is moving to a new domain or subdomain, Google has added a change of address tool in Search Console. This feature had been available in the old version of GSC but wasn't migrated over. This tool tells Google about your change and helps to migrate your Google Search results from your old site to your new site.

Before you get on with your day, I'd like to ask for about 3 minutes of your time to help us learn more about how marketing teams are handling technology upgrades. If you've recently replaced or upgraded a marketing technology program in your organization, please take our brief survey. We'll share the results in about 6 weeks.

When holiday shopping for parents, searchers want more direction

"Shopping for parents can prove difficult for many – in fact, shoppers were 1.98 times more likely to browse through a gift guide for inspiration," explains Microsoft's Purna Virji about research she analyzed from last year's holiday season. "We see an emergence of creative gift idea reseller sites as a result. These tend to range from quirky novelties to practical-yet-unnecessary gadgets. Shoppers were also 1.84 times more likely to purchase from gender-curated sites, while seeking inspiration and ideas from sites such as Esquire and Men's Health since they offer gift ideas plus product reviews. Users were more inclined to multitask while shopping for their parents as they typically have a less clearly defined shopping goal. As a result, they also over-index on idea sites relative to other relationships. "

"Act on it:  Include gift guides and personalization in site links and ad copy. Additionally, consider bidding on upper-funnel keywords and have the ads sending shoppers to gift-guides specifically for parents, to set yourself apart from the competition."

Natural links.  Um, duh. Google's John Mueller says he'd "opt to letting links come naturally, often you can't really influence that." And if multiple links come from the same domain, that's not a problem, he added.

Signs of a Google update. We are seeing some signs of a Google update. Nothing is confirmed, we're just seeing some chatter and signals within the SEO community right now.
