🔍 A Dawn Anderson deep dive: BERT, passage indexing & SEO

Good morning Search Marketer, some Friday deep thoughts for you today.

For years, there have been signs that Apple is investing in search capabilities of its own. But estimates of just how big the current search deal between Google and Apple is worth — $8 to $12 billion — gained a lot of attention when the DOJ filed its antitrust suit against Google last week. That got Greg Sterling wondering if the Google antitrust case will make an Apple search engine more likely. Even with Apple's resources, gaining search share will be an uphill battle, says Greg, and unless the government forcibly ends the search deal, there is little incentive to break away on its own.

Could Google passage indexing be leveraging BERT? That's the question international technical SEO consultant Dawn Anderson dives into in a fantastic, deeply sourced look at BERT, BERT-like models, the incredible advancement of algorithms to understand long form content — and what it all may mean for passage indexing and SEO. "Whilst much of this work is very new, a year is a long time in the AI NLP research space so expect huge changes by this time next year," says Dawn.

OK, that's it for the brain teasers. I'll leave you with a quick note that Google Ads released a new look for building custom reports in Report Editor yesterday. If you use Data Studio, it will feel a bit more like that, just less sophisticated. There are new features such as conditional formatting and more sorting and filtering.

A heads up for Instagram e-commerce advertisers

Beware, if you're looking to run dynamic product ad (DPA) carousels in Instagram Stories, all of the products in the carousel will show the product name AND price of the product that appears in the first image, e-commerce marketing pro Pamela Lund noticed.

Why we care. This might be a minor issue in many cases — similar products with similar pricing — but it posed a problem in Lund's case. She was looking to advertise high priced products in order to build a retargeting list of higher value customers. That's not going to work "if the wrong price + product name is displayed with a different product image," she noted.

Coverage report is delayed again!

Google Search Console coverage report delayed. Yep, once again, the coverage report in Google Search Console is delayed again. It is delayed now over 10-days. This happens too frequently, don't you think?

Maximize Clicks in 2021. Starting in January, Google Ads will use daily campaign budgets instead of target spend for campaigns and bidding portfolios using the Maximize Clicks bidding strategy. Google announced this change was coming a year ago.

Request indexing tool. As you know, earlier this month, Google suspended the request indexing tool in Search Console. But it should be back soon, because Google wrote a blog post that you should use it for your site before Black Friday. I'd expect it back soon.

John Mueller trolled me. As you know, the search shorts section includes a lot of quotes from John Mueller of Google. Well, here is one where he trolls me a bit on Twitter
