🔍 Future of PPC marketing | More GSC data

Good morning search marketers, what will your job look like in 5 years?

Last week at SMX Advanced, I sat down with Frederick Vallaeys to talk about what the future holds for digital marketers, his experiences as an early AdWords team member at Google (he cross-checked Sergey in a hockey game) and more. His new book, Digital Marketing In An AI World, offers a look at what roles for PPC marketers and agencies will look like and what skills you'll need to stay successful as use of machine learning accelerates. Have a listen or read a lightly edited and condensed version here.

The performance report in Google Search Console now shows 90 days of historical data. That's up from just 28 days, which means much better trending insights about your organic performance on Google.

The inclusion of XML Sitemaps as a WordPress Core feature could become a reality. A proposal by a group of Yoast and Google team members as well as other contributors also introduces an XML Sitemaps API. The initial integration would meet minimum search engine requirements, but not cover image, video or news sitemaps, XML Sitemaps caching mechanisms or user-facing changes such as UI controls that exclude individual posts or pages from the sitemap.

If you've got a new or restructured site, you can now submit as many as 500 URLs to Bing in one API call. The new Batch API means you no longer need to make a separate API call for each URL you submit. Earlier this year, Bing introduced its indexing API and requested that sites begin using it to notify Bing of new URLs and content for it to index. You may submit up to 10,000 URLs per day — now in batches of 500 with the Batch API.

Data science expert shares how LinkedIn runs sample SEO A/B testing

"At LinkedIn's scale, where we have more than hundreds of thousand URLs in each experiment, we simply randomize URLs into two groups and compare their metric impact," explains Eui-Ji Noh of LinkedIn during her session at SMX London. "However, when we start the experiment, we roll out the experiment feature gradually from a small percentage to 50% to minimize risk from the experiment."

"In terms of the experiment duration, it depends on the type of experiment and the type of product we experiment on. But generally, we try to run it at least a month to give enough time for search engines to crawl the new changes and reflect them in search ranking."

Google conferences are coming...

Google to pre-announce future core updates.  Did you like that Google pre-announced the last June 2019 core update?  Well, Danny Sullivan from Google said they likely will pre-announce future core updates as well.

Google original reporting algorithm. Google's Danny Sullivan said the Google core updates are different from Google detecting original reporting.

Crawl rates. Google's John Mueller said crawling and indexing frequency depends on so many things – so don't try to get bogged down into trying to predict Google updates around those changes.

Google experiments. Some Google experiments fully launch to the public, some never go beyond being tested.  It is hard for Google to predict which will launch and which won't.

CCN traffic drop. Dan Shure took a quick look at CCN after they complained about their massive traffic drop.  It turns out the site has some major SEO issues but at the same time, this was just a quick look.
