๐Ÿ” Keeping the conversation going

Good morning Search Marketer, welcome to Wednesday.

On the search news front, Bing Webmaster Tools now lets you see competitive link data — no need to be site-verified to see who's pointing at your competitors. And Google was experiencing indexing issues again yesterday. New content from publishers wasn't showing up.

Looking at the bigger picture, many of us are focused on our communities and ways in which we can confront systemic racism and do more to support diversity and diverse voices at work and in our industry. As these days, weeks and months unfold, many of us will have challenging and overdue conversations. It can be hard to know where to begin. Below are a few ideas and stories to consider, share, and talk about. It's time to keep the conversation going with fellow marketers.

Begin at the team level. "If diversity is like growing a flower garden, you have to prepare the soil first, so the best way is to start with your team," wrote CMO of Visiture Ronald Don in a column on our sister site Marketing Land. "Diversity-centered hiring practices are a subject unto themselves, and if you haven't yet embraced them, that's something to work on first. If you don't have representation on your marketing staff, your representation in your campaigns will suffer."

Minority employees are not client bait. "Businesses that already have a diverse team in play should remember that their minority team members aren't there to rubber-stamp marketing materials as 'certified unproblematic,'" said Don. >> Read More

Agencies have a responsibility, too. "I feel like a lot of agencies give the excuse of, 'We don't know what to do, we don't know how to fix this," a source at an agency holding company told AdWeek this week. "And a lot of people let that pass and give the agencies the benefit of the doubt because they also feel like they don't know what to do. To me, that feels incredibly lazy. But that's the entire nature of the work we do: We get problems, don't know what to do with them at first, and then solve them."

We want to hear and share your own experiences: the work you're doing, the conversations you're having, and suggestions for the community to foster diversity and equality at work. Have something to share? Send me a note at gmarvin@thirddoormedia.com

Take care,

Ginny Marvin,

Meta keywords making a comeback?

Meta keywords tag. Bing has said they do not use it, but now Frรฉdรฉric Dubut from Bing is saying he won't give a yes or no answer. For now, it's unclear whether or not Bing now uses the meta keywords tag.

URL parameter tool. Google's John Mueller said the URL parameter tool is "not a replacement for the robots.txt — if you need to be sure that something's not crawled, then block it properly."

Black ribbon on Google. On Sunday, Google placed a small black ribbon on its home page. Sunday Pichai, the CEO of Google, wrote on Twitter, "Today on US Google & YouTube homepages we share our support for racial equality in solidarity with the Black community and in memory of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery & others who don't have a voice. For those feeling grief, anger, sadness & fear, you are not alone."
