🔍 Preparing for the "great reset"

Good morning, Search Marketer.

We apologize for missing you yesterday due to a technical issue on our end. The glitch is fixed and we're happy to be back in your inbox today.

We all know local businesses have been hit exceptionally hard by COVID-19 restrictions. As local retail and restaurants start to open up, "there is this great reset where you have an opportunity to actually grab market share that you've never had before," anticipates Foursquare's CEO David Shim.

As consumers' consumption habits adapt to shopping in-store again, "you need to get in front of these folks, because if you wait too long . . . the number two, the number three, the number four player in the space has an incredible opportunity to grab market share," said Shim on Live with Search Engine Land. Marketers can use location data to help them understand how consumers are behaving and what types of audiences are reemerging and forming new, post-pandemic habits.

Developing a voice search strategy? Don't forget Bing, says Katherine Waier Ong, owner of WO Strategies and long-time SEO. The search engine powers answers for Amazon Alexa devices and several car manufacturers. She also talked about what she looks for when hiring SEOs and the importance of training. Watch the full interview here.

Coming up Friday, Barry Schwartz will host a discussion on the Page Experience Update on the next Live with Search Engine Land. Barry will be joined by SEO content experts:

  • Aja Frost, Head of Content SEO, HubSpot
  • Sarah Teach, Evergreen Content SEO Lead, The Motley Fool
  • Marty Weintraub, Founder, Aimclear

It was a bug, showing rich results for home page snippets.

Home page rich results was a bug.  It was a bug when Google began showing rich results for home pages, but Google should be fixing this soon. It does not want home pages in the search results to show rich results.

Ranking before content analysis. John Mueller of Google was asked if Google does a first round of ranking for just the URL before it does any content analysis. In response, John said, "Not that I am aware of."

Page experience. It's never too soon to work on page experience. Mueller said on Twitter, "Working on improving page experience can take quite some time, and users appreciate any progress you make, so getting an early start is fine!"
