🔍 It's OK to disconnect today, marketers

Good morning, Search Marketer, and just… wow,

I was supposed to write to you this morning to introduce myself. But, it's been hard for me to focus on marketing as I've been watching the news chyrons scroll with headlines I don't think I ever could have imagined in America.

The thing about being a marketer is we're always plugged in. We're constantly checking headlines, scanning social media, seeing what's new in SERPs, adjusting our ad budgets based on user behavior, etc.

Many marketing outsiders don't realize that along with being personally affected by news and current events, it also affects our work — penetrating deep into almost every aspect of our lives.

We've got a few headlines and new articles in today's newsletter, but if you feel the need to take a break from marketing and news, I want to encourage you to do that. If you need a bit of escape from what's happening, feel free to read on to discover the latest from SEL.

I'm hoping you can find what you need today. Take care and feel free to lean on your fellow marketers as you need it.

P.S. Here's a 5-minute meditation if you need to disconnect and find a little calm this morning.

Google's Lighthouse is now recommending JavaScript library alternates

Lighthouse now serves as a beacon to warn you when your project includes old libraries that have more modern alternatives.

These older libraries could have security flaws, outdated coding patterns, and/or large bundle sizes. These things might then pop up in your Lighthouse reports, which are related to how Chrome parses your code and content. Being aware of the recommendations and the work that implementing them entails can help you communicate with your developer counterparts.

Search Engine Land SEO for Developers Expert Detlef Johnson examines the implications of this new feature with reference to the popular MomentJS library, but Google could be presenting recommendations for more libraries in the future.

The technology that's saving retail businesses from going under

Sponsored by Lightspeed

The pandemic is changing the game for retail, and fast. Not only is the competition fiercer than ever before, but the coronavirus has been the cause of a dramatic decrease in in-store traffic.

While the situation has forced some companies to shut down, many have realized that if they want to break through and maximize profits, they will need to adapt to more flexible business models with the adoption of new technologies. In order to remain competitive, online and offline experiences must "wow" the consumer. Having a great product is not sufficient to satisfy today's buyer profile.

The secret sauce for these struggling businesses lies in the ability to combine in-store and online shopping to create an omnichannel retail strategy to provide the best possible experience all around, without having to choose one or the other. In today's modern economy, the inter-connected customer shouldn't have to choose either.

Google confirms showing homework practice problems in search results

If you've been in school at all in the last decade, chances are you've not-so-secretly Googled a homework question to quickly find the answer. With COVID lockdowns and quarantines, the US Census Bureau reports that 93% of US households with school-aged kids are participating in some form of online or distance learning.

These factors make Google's new test of in-SERP homework quizzes even more relevant. We're not sure if this test is a response to online schooling or something the company has been planning for a while, but Google did confirm that it is an experiment for the time being.

For now, there is no indication whether this is a partnership with Google or if the search engine is pulling these questions from other sites to generate the quizzes. "We'll share more details about how the ecosystem can participate once it is available more widely," says a Google spokesperson.

We do know that these in-SERP quiz tests could make it easier for parents who have become de facto educators and harder for students trying to quickly Google their homework.

Google ad revenue does not influence organic search results

Google organic and ad revenue. Ryan Moulton, a senior Google engineer said in a Hacker News thread that he was personally involved in launching changes in Google Search that had a significant negative impact on Google Ads revenue.  He said the organic search team is separate from the Google Ads team and they do not make decisions based on ad revenue.

Destination URL in Search Console. Glenn Gabe reminds us that the Google Search Console reports on destination urls in the Coverage reporting. So if you see urls that are categorized as blocked by robots.txt or noindexed, but they aren't, they could be redirecting to urls that are. And that's what is reported. Can send you off on a wild goose chase, he said.

Google My Business and Google Search. John Mueller of Google said a Google My Business listing is not required or needed to rank in normal Google web search.
