🔍 SEO community remembers Hamlet Batista

Good morning, Search Marketer, and I hope you're finding time to reflect this week,

The SEO community is hurting today after our own Hamlet Batista died on Tuesday from COVID-19. The outpouring of grief and love has spread across Twitter and includes beautiful tributes to how he made an impact on those close to him and those who respected his work and learned from him.

Many at Search Engine Land and SMX had the opportunity to work closely with Hamlet as he spoke at events and shared his expertise with the community. While I never had the pleasure of meeting him in-person, I appreciate how he made unapproachable topics seem within my reach when he spoke at events–the mark of a true teacher. Sharing knowledge, asking questions, and showing support for one another is the hallmark of the SEO community, and Hamlet exemplified these tenets.Our own Editor George Nguyen wrote a touching, personal piece in honor of Hamlet. If you are grieving this week, please reach out to others in the community for support. And, if you're able, please consider donating to the GoFundMe campaign set up for his family.

Visual UGC drives online retail purchases

Online retail shopping broke all records in the 2020 holiday season, and Bazaarvoice, the user-generated content (UGC) platform, has research findings suggesting that visual UGC is a powerful driver of conversions. "How visual and social content increase online sales," published yesterday, is based on surveys of over 8,000 consumers in the U.S., U.K., Canada, France, Germany and Australia.

Here are some highlights:

  • 73% of the 18-34 demographic prefer visual UGC on social media — a result which holds strong across all age groups at 64%;
  • Two-thirds of shoppers prefer customer-generated images to images created professionally for brands;
  • Over half agree that social media influences purchases;
  • 45% place weight on the quality of customer reviews of products rather than the number of reviews or how recently they were posted.

Why we care. Let's be clear, as a platform used by brands to manage UGC, Bazaarvoice has skin in the game. Nevertheless, brands should be thinking hard about differentiation in the online retail space: this data is worth a look.

HubSpot establishes Black Advisory Board

Continuing its commitment to taking tangible action to combat racial injustice, HubSpot this week announced the establishment of a Black Advisory Board. The Board will provide advice on diversity and inclusion, including ways to improve the HubSpot experience for Black job candidates, employees, customers, and partners.

This follows on CEO Brian Halligan's public support for Black Lives Matter, a partnership to establish a Center for Digital Business at HBCU Howard University, and a pledge of $20 million to social impact investing.

Why we care. A lot of businesses in our sector are saying the right things about diversity and inclusion. Some are taking action. HubSpot is setting the pace.

Entities versus normal queries on Google Search.

Entity vs query on Google. Mark Williams-Cook shows an interesting example of where Google shows different search results for a query vs an entity.  John Mueller from Google responded on Twitter, "There can be a slight difference between entity & query, at least as far as I understand it. Usually that's mostly aligned though. I'll bug a file for [pimoroni ltd], which I can't reproduce here."

CIA Google problems. The CIA seems to be having problems with Google. Specifically, the CIA's website seems to be having ranking issues in Google Search as Glenn Gabe points out.

Google Maps Hotel pins. It has been a while since I went to a hotel but that does not mean Google won't be testing changes with hotel search. Google was caught testing red hotel map pins in search.
