🔍 LinkedIn launches courses for advertisers

Good morning, Search Marketer, and are you on Clubhouse?

I just joined Clubhouse and hopped into my first room last week. The invite only app (which, what an idea for driving chatter and creating a sense of exclusivity for a new product!) allows users to host "rooms" or conference calls around certain topics. There is a moderator/host and a panel of experts which discuss subjects and take questions from the audience members.

The idea has likely been in the works for a while, but it makes me wonder if there's capacity for another virtual meeting app online during COVID time. Do we want to sit in more calls after days of Zoom meetings, phone calls, virtual school, webinars, and the like?

Only time will tell if Clubhouse really takes off or goes the way of other social media platforms like Ello and Google+.

LinkedIn launches online courses to teach advertisers how to use LinkedIn advertising tools

Have you ever used LinkedIn ads? Last time I tried, which I'll admit was maybe 6 or so years ago, I didn't see much success. As a paid advertising noob at the time, I chalked it up to my own inexperience with the platform. But it seems like even now, I'm not the only one struggling.

LinkedIn announced last week that they've launched an on-demand learning hub to help marketers make the most of their LinkedIn Ads. LinkedIn Marketing Labs offers multiple courses like "Using LinkedIn's Ad Targeting," "Reporting and Analytics for LinkedIn Ads," and "Using LinkedIn for Lead Generation."

In the announcement, Renee Lowe, Customer Marketing Manager at LinkedIn says that, when done correctly, LinkedIn advertising works: "Lead generation forms on LinkedIn drive 5X more conversions than landing pages and you're 6X more likely to convert audiences when they see both brand and acquisition messages on LinkedIn."

Marketers with experience on the platform vary in their opinions on the effectiveness in practice.

The courses offer both basic and intermediate levels and are free to advertisers. You can choose a customized learning path based on whether you run campaigns or plan media (or both).

SEO community joins Clubhouse call discussing planning and predictions for 2021

Clubhouse is the latest social media app sweeping the search community. It's essentially a platform to jump on conference calls with a panel of moderators and an audience that can ask questions.

I hopped on a call last Friday hosted by some of the big names in SEO to discuss planning and predictions for 2021. The panel included Aleyda Solis, Amanda Jordan, Ross Hudgens, Kevin Indig, Mike King, and Paul Shapiro. So what did they predict?

  • SEO for publishers: How AMP and non-AMP could affect news organizations' ability to show in Google's Top Stories (Ross Hudgens says some publishers will likely drop AMP.)
  • Content in search: How GPT-3 could affect content production online and does it write well enough to rank? (Mike King says likely yes!)
  • Google My Business: Amanda Jordan mentioned big dashboard changes in GMB that have made it a lot easier to use and predicted that responding to reviews may become a ranking factor in local search.
  • Ranking factors: There was passionate discussion about Rand Fishkin's controversial article claiming unlinked mentions are the next big ranking factor. Most SEOs disagreed with Fishkin's take.

What are your big SEO predictions for 2021? Email me and let me know: clyden@thirddoormedia.com.

Give us the basics of SEO illustrated with adoptable dogs, and we're there. Ruth Everett took a unique COVID lockdown idea and made it a reality: creating a website that demystifies SEO for practitioners at all levels while promoting animal rescue.

"I'm a technical SEO analyst by day at DeepCrawl, animal charity volunteer by night and dog lover all the time, hence the idea for this project, the fundamentals of SEO paired with an adoptable dog," says Everett.

Each page tackles an important aspect of SEO (like site structure, on-page SEO, and indexing) and includes links to adopt a pup from Wild at Heart Foundation, a global dog rescue organization.

Basketball, disavows and QR codes.

Google basketball doodle. Barry Schwartz loves basketball, a lot of people do.  Google had a Doodle to remind us of when the game was invented and by who.  Check it out over here.

Old disavow link tool going away. A few months ago, Google released a new version of the disavow link tool.  Now, the old tool will be a goner on January 19th. John Mueller of Google said on Twitter "the new one has been out for a while, they do the same thing."

Bing QR code generator. If you are still into making QR codes, Microsoft Bing has a super easy way to make those codes. Just search for [qr code] in Bing Search and you get this QR code generator tool directly in the search results.
