🔍 SEO spam scourge | Yelp does verifications

Good morning, search marketers, are you voicing your queries these days?

One of the biggest reasons sites get hacked? SEO spamming. And it's on the rise. A Sucuri report found that 51 percent of hacked sites in 2018 were targeted for "manipulation of search engine optimization." That's up from 44 percent in 2017. Most troubling is how hard it can be to detect so-called Search Engine Poisoning attacks.

More evidence that voice is on the rise is here with Stone Temple Consulting's third-annual report on voice. One in five people use voice to search on their phones, with voice being the second-most popular option for conducting mobile searches on their phones – behind mobile browsers – the report found.

Yelp has launched a new "Verified Licenses" program for local providers. The $1 a day paid product is similar to Google's Local Services ads. As with "Google Guaranteed" businesses, those verified by Yelp have badges displayed next to their listings. Yelp says testing showed higher visibility and engagement — particularly for businesses with few reviews.

Bing rolled Maximize Clicks to all advertisers globally. The automated bidding strategy aims to drive the highest number of clicks within budget. Bing does offer some controls, including a max CPC and the ability to set manual bids for certain keywords and ad groups in a campaign.

Lots more below, including thoughts on why Duck Duck Go's privacy matters — and why it's growing.

Why DuckDuckGo privacy matters

The growth of DuckDuckGo suggests users want a platform that values privacy protection. "Look at how Apple is stepping up its narrative about protecting privacy," explains Adam Dorfman of Reputation. "Brands that ignore these signals do so at their own peril. I'm not suggesting that businesses make DuckDuckGo the focus of their attention. The growth of DuckDuckGo, though, underscores why it's important that you make Apple a priority, given the company's relationship with DuckDuckGo."

He suggests keeping an eye on this search engine and, "more importantly, listen to your customers. What are they telling you about privacy?"
