๐Ÿ” Auction Insights tips | Barry and Rand part deux

Good morning search marketers, a visualization can make all the difference.

Are you making the most of Auction Insights data? At SMX Advanced, James Hebdon of Paid Search Magic offered up tips (and a template) for getting more out of Auction Insights to analyze performance fluctuations, the competitive landscape and more with compelling, client- and boss-friendly visualizations. Listen to his Insights session, Visualizing Auction Insights Data for Competitive Intelligence, and get some bonus tips as well.

In part two of Barry Schwartz's video interviews with Rand Fishkin, the two SEO veterans discuss Google's market position and activity that "costs small- and medium-sized businesses a tremendous amount of opportunity," as Rand put it, adding, "I don't think Google realizes that in the long-term it takes away a lot of the incentive to build things for people." Barry, recalling a conversation with Google when Featured Snippets first launched, said he thinks "Google knows exactly what it's doing."

The duo also chatted about Bing's missed opportunities, ranking studies and much more.  Watch it here. If you missed last week's installment about the early days of SEO, Moz and Rand's new company SparkToro, tune in here

How much does the site-building platform you choose matter for rankings? A new analysis of 150,000 SMB websites indicates it could matter quite a bit. More research is needed, but the analysis by directory site FreshChalk found that WP Engine and Squarespace perform well when it comes to Google rankings, while Wix, market-share leader among the group of analyzed sites, fared at the bottom.

Claim your Knowledge Graph panel, now

"Google's Knowledge Graph is allowing entities to claim their Knowledge Graph panel to become the authoritative owners and editors of the results within the panel," explains Tony Edward of Elite SEM. "Here is how to do it: 1) Click the 'Claim this knowledge panel' button at the bottom of your Knowledge Graph panel. This will take you to a Google Verification page. You will notice in the URL for the page has your custom MID (machine-generated identifier) number which is specific to you as an entity. 2) Click the 'Get Verified' button. You will then be taken to a page with a list of options to verify you're the entity. From there you will have to select one option and sign in to complete the verification. Options will typically include YouTube, Twitter and Google Search Console."

"Once you complete the verification the 'Claim your knowledge panel' button will disappear and you will now have authoritative editing power on your panel where you can suggest changes."

Spam removal ≠ suppressing free speech

Spam removal & free speech. Bing's spam fighter, Frรฉdรฉric Dubut, said on Twitter that removing spam from search is not the same as suppressing free speech.

Worried about negative SEO. If you are so worried about negative SEO, John Mueller from Google says then just use the disavow backlink tool. You probably do not have to worry about it, but use it if it makes you sleep better.

Dropping breadcrumbs. Google may be testing dropping/removing breadcrumbs from the mobile search results snippet — or it might be a bug, this was spotted by Sergey Alakov.
