🔍 Google moves to formalize Robots Exclusion Protocol | The search marketer of the year mindset

Good morning search marketers, let's make it official.

Yesterday, Google announced that it posted a Request for Comments to the Internet Engineering Task Force to formalize the Robots Exclusion Protocol (REP) specification. Although it's been around for a quarter of a century, the REP has yet to become a formal standard despite every major search engine using robots.txt as a crawling directive. Is anything really changing, though? Our own Barry Schwartz posed that question to Google's Gary Illyes, to which he replied, "No, nothing at all."

Along with that announcement, Google also said that it's going to be open-sourcing its robots.txt parser — you can access it on Github right now.

Managing campaigns, developing strategies, pleasing clients and adapting to the circumstances are all table stakes for successful marketers, but what really sets the best apart? Felicia Delveccio, director of digital media at DAC Group and a Search Engine Land Award search marketer of the year winner, says it's largely about relationships. Her long-view approach and emphasis on listening to her client enabled her to lead an 18-month realignment that checked off all the boxes in terms of success metrics (including a whopping 971% increase in store visits) as well as identifying new opportunities.

I'm going to stop here, but there are more insights below. Keep on reading for your Pro Tip on how to track button clicks with Google Tag Manager as well as your daily Search Shorts and much more.

Here's how to track button clicks with Google Tag Manager

"GTM can track clicks on just about any website element you want. Some examples of button click actions to track include: Purchase links leading to third-party seller sites, 'Add to Cart' actions, Links to social media profiles, Click-to-call buttons, Subscribe buttons and PDF downloads," explains Tim Jensen of Clix Marketing.

"First, you'll need to set up a trigger to pinpoint the click(s) you want to target. Next, you can set up event tracking to fire a custom event into Google Analytics when the click happens, or associate the click with an ad platform conversion tag. Create a new trigger and select a trigger type of Click – All Elements. You can then specify which clicks to track using as many parameters as you'd like. For instance, you could track a Download button with a specific ID only on your landing page URL."

"Finally, associate the trigger with the tag(s) you want to use for sending data back into Google Analytics, Google Ads or other platforms."

Old can still be relevant...

Old articles can be relevant in Google.  Google's John Mueller said on Twitter, "Sometimes even posts from 2014 are relevant. The date is not the only ranking factor."

Minify CSS & HTML. You can benefit from minifying your HTML and CSS, says John Mueller of Google.

Image sitemaps localized? You do not need to localize your image XML sitemaps, according to Google. Learn more over here.
