🔍 Product advertising is taking off

Good morning, search marketers, are we in a commerce boom?

Spending on product advertising on search, social and marketplace channels is outpacing overall spend growth. That's according to Kenshoo's second-quarter look at activity on its platform, and is in line with what Merkle reported on its client base as well.

Search product spend grew by 30% year over year in the second quarter, compared to an overall search spend increase of 10%. Product ad spend on social increased 38% last quarter. And retailers advertising through Kenshoo spent nearly as much in the second quarter on Amazon sponsored ads as they did in the holiday fourth quarter of 2018.

This trend is not likely to slow as we head into the back-to-school and holiday seasons.

Take a look at Google Image search and you might see the new "Swipe to Visit" feature after you select an image. "Swipe to Visit" will display a preview of AMP-enabled websites. Users can then swipe up on the preview to load the full AMP page. If your site already supports AMP, there's no action to take on your end.

Traffic data from AMP in Google Images will also be viewable in a Search Console performance report in a new search area called "AMP on Image result." That will roll out in the coming weeks.

I'm thrilled to announce that the agenda for SMX East is now live. If you're interested in speaking, be sure to check out the tips laid out here. In addition to a full slate of SEO and SEM sessions, we'll also have special-focus tracks for digital agencies and multi-location businesses. I hope you'll mark your calendar to join us in NYC this November 13-14!

Focus on the platforms your customers are most likely to use

"While having positive reviews on any platform can be a boon, remember that one of the golden rules of effective e-commerce SEO is to focus on the platforms that are most relevant to you and your customers," explains Ronald Dod of Visiture. "Consumer goods companies will likely focus on Amazon and other retail sites. Restaurants, bars and venues will want to keep a good Yelp rating, as will professional service providers like plumbers and accountants. (Businesses of the latter type may want to keep Angie's List in mind as well.) Facebook and Google reviews, meanwhile, are broadly applicable across many types of goods and services."
