🔍 Google's minor, but not tiny, July algorithm tweaks

Good morning, search marketers, are you using messaging for your business?

If you've opted into messaging in your Google My Business account, you may find a new "Get a Quote" call-to-action button showing in your business' knowledge panel in branded search results. Google appears to be rolling it out on some local knowledge panels. Spotted by Joy Hawkins, the large call-to-action button shows up on desktop and mobile. This could be an effective feature for getting quote requests — just be sure you're prepared to respond to messages in a timely manner.

There has been a whole lot of chatter in the SEO community about a potential Google algorithm update between July 11 and July 18. Search Engine Land's Barry Schwartz has been trying to get confirmation from Google either way, but there's been no official word. John Mueller did say "we always do updates" but he has no real information about this update to share.

Looking at the tracking tools — from SEMRush, Moz, Algoroo, RankRanger and others — there are patterns that corroborate what the SEO industry is noticing with their clients' traffic and rankings. As Barry notes, SEOs shouldn't be chasing algorithm updates, but understanding when they happen can, of course, be useful to know.

There's more to read below, including a Pro Tip for succeeding during back-to-school and more.

Review and adjust your bidding strategies for competitive back-to-school campaigns

"With only a short season to work with and competition fiercer than ever, proactively adjusting your bids is paramount to the success of your seasonal marketing strategy," cautions Steve Costanza of Sidecar. "A best practice is to use revenue per click as your target KPI, because it considers both the increase in conversion rate and the downshift in average order values that come with heavy promotional periods. Of course, as investment prospectuses always say, past performance is no guarantee of future performance. Rather, more recent performance (generally 30 days) of your top queries and products should be the base off which you build your predictive bid adjustments. Factors like inventory, product mix, competitive landscape, and changes to Google's algorithm can have massive implications on performance year to year. Keep an eye on the future, but stay firmly planted in the now."

YMYL expert content & good UX.

How Google determines good user experience. In a Google webmaster hangout, John Mueller said that if he was a search algorithm, he would use various signals to determine if a site had a good user experience. Some of those signals involved comparing your content, sub-topics and images to others in the industry.

Have experts write. For medical or YMYL sites, it is probably best to have experts write the content or at least review and vouch for the content on your web site. John Mueller of Google gave this guidance in a video hangout.
